Hello to all of our members, friends and supporters. Whatever stage of covid19 lock-down you are currently in, we hope you are all staying safe and keeping in touch with friends, family and community. It has been a strange old year and as we look ahead to coming out of lockdown we are are wondering what community theatre will look like as we step back into a changed world. Covid19 has brought about a shift in thinking and an economic recession and it has been predicted that post-covid audiences may be more likely to attend lower-cost local productions rather than larger more expensive shows. This is a great motivator for us to think creatively about working together to bring a variety of great local theatre experiences to the Surf Coast.
Our committee has been working hard behind the scenes during lockdown. Take a look below at the exciting progress being made on the community arts/performance space. We have also been involved in Surf Coast Arts Trail online exhibition "Portal" and have made a short online play "The Call Centre".
We have a Special General Meeting coming up in October and all financial members are encouraged to vote. See below for all the info and  opportunities to get involved.
As always, we still welcome all newcomers whatever your passion - on the stage, or behind the scenes - get in touch with us and come join us when we are back in action!  In the meantime let's stay safe and support each other the best we can.

Theatre Matters

On Sunday August 16 Michael Baker (TTT president) and Maryanne Doolan (one of the founding members of TTT) joined our Anglesea Performing Arts friends Janine McKenzie and Nikki Watson in an online conversation with local playwright Janet Brown. The discussion highlights the wealth of theatrical talent we have in our region and the potential to develop and grow community theatre in to the future. All speakers brought a wealth of experience, insight and passion for their craft to the conversation. If you missed it, you can watch it on the Surf Coast Arts Trail Facebook page here.

On Saturday August 29 TTT's Gay Bell (who is also a member of the MAC committee) participated in an online discussion about the exciting new plans to turn the old basketball courts at the Surfworld complex into an arts and performance space. This is highly recommended viewing for all TTT members and friends as it provides a background for how the project came about as well as insight into how the space will be developed as an asset for our town and our creative community. If you missed you can watch it and other valuable Portal discussions on the Surf Coast Arts Trail Facebook page here.

online play readings

During covid19 lockdown we have been having the odd play reading. Anyone is welcome to join in as a reader, or an observer. It's a great way to come together and keep doing the things we love.
Stay up to date with any upcoming play readings by following us on facebook or instagram, or contact us via email to express your interest.

Since our last newsletter, the Multi Arts Centre, has become incorporated and is now called the Multi Arts Centre (The MAC) Inc. The MAC is a Committee of local arts-supporters and practitioners working together to develop:
a) the old basketball court in Beach Road into a theatre/gallery
b) the future profile of arts in the local area.

The MAC Committee has been beavering away preparing a management plan for the next few years. The plan will address the philosophical, financial, operational, governance and infrastructure future of the facility, so there are some big decisions to be made. This management plan will be the basis of our lease agreement with the shire and we hope to organise a minimum two year lease (with the possibility of annual arrangements after that). The shire’s plans for a cultural and library facility suggest that the redevelopment of the basketball court / Surfworld Museum / Visitor Information Centre site will occur (subject to local, state and federal funding) and is slated for completion by 2024.

This planning process has allowed us to focus on what we need to buy to make the facility usable, how we engage with our community, who will eventually be the Board of Management for the MAC, supporting people to use the facility and how we spend ratepayers’ money that the Surf Coast Shire Council kindly allocated to the Arts Facility in their 2020-21 budget. Look out for local advertisements, community notices, newspaper articles and social media posts about MAC’s progress. Wish us luck!
Could you be a MAC Board Member?

The MAC will soon be looking for expressions of interest from those who have the time and the skills to volunteer as a board members. No artistic skills are required for these positions however a passion for supporting a flourishing community arts/performance space is a must. Ideally you will have a strong background in another field that supports the management and growth of a community facility. Managerial, legal, construction, architecture etc....... your skills may be just what is needed!
If this sounds like something you would like to be a part of, be sure to watch the  MAC: A Community Driven Arts Space video and prepare a detailed CV as part of your expression of interest.......and stay tuned...

The Last Word

Everyone has different styles and techniques. And ultimately good acting is when you are in the moment, when you’re completely involved in the story you’re telling. How you get there doesn’t matter I reckon, as long as you get there.
